Key features
You may be familiar with Anbernic from its more affordable retro handhelds, which are perfectly capable of emulating games at Nintendo 64 level and below. But with the Anbernic RG477 V, you can effortlessly take it a step further: this is truly a premium system. The retro handheld features a spacious, square 4.7-inch display with a high resolution of 1280 by 960 pixels. This allows you to perfectly upscaling the image quality and resolution of the Nintendo GameCube, Wii and PlayStation 2 by a factor of two, without any loss of quality. The chipset, the MediaTek Dimensity 8300, certainly has more to offer – but if you don’t utilise its full potential, you’ll benefit from longer battery life. After all, the less you demand from a handheld like this, the more energy-efficient it can operate.
Why this model is special
What’s more, you won’t be paying over the odds for the Anbernic RG477 V, as it’s available in two configurations. The base model has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, so you might not even need an extra microSD card. There’s also a variant available with 12 + 256 GB, which really makes the most of the device. No retro console will be too much for it, and even with the larger games from later generations, you’ll still have plenty of space left over for all your favourite classics.
Just to summarise briefly. You choose…
- for the basic model if you’re not too demanding, are looking for a nice retro handheld and don’t intend to play games at the highest settings all the time;
- the Pro model if you want to get the most out of your hardware, don’t want to compromise on performance or design, and want to be sure of stable frame rates, regardless of the games you play on it.
In both cases, you can play games on these devices that are on a par with sixth-generation consoles. In this instance, we’re referring to the GameCube and PlayStation 2 (and the Xbox, once a decent Android emulator is available for it). Wii games will also run smoothly on this, as the Wii is essentially a souped-up GameCube. Nintendo 3DS titles also work on this, though you may occasionally need to switch displays manually. No problem, as a good emulator allows you to do this with a single press of a button. Naturally, consoles and handhelds released earlier work perfectly on this.
What’s more, you’re guaranteed a robust software environment with Android 14 on board, and you can rely on stable wireless connections with Bluetooth 5.3 (in case you want to connect an external controller) and Wi-Fi 6E (in case you want to stream cloud or PC games). You can also connect the system to a TV or monitor and use the handheld as a sort of portable console. Charging is done via USB-C, so you don’t need to invest in a separate charger. Your smartphone’s charger will work just fine here. The battery has a capacity of no less than 5500 mAh, which lasts for around eight hours (depending on the games you play).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the 8 GB and 12 GB models?
In principle, both models perform at the same level, but not to the same standard. The version with more RAM offers extra scope for more demanding or smoother emulation, multitasking, AI functions and future use. For everything up to and including the PlayStation 2, 8 GB of RAM is certainly more than enough.
Which systems is this handheld compatible with?
Everything right up to the PlayStation 2 runs perfectly well, and it’s ideal for Wii and 3DS games. This makes the Anbernic RG477 V suitable as a sort of all-in-one system.
Can I connect the Anbernic RG477 V to a TV or monitor?
Yes, you can play at up to 1080p on an external screen via USB-C with DisplayPort. If you pair a controller via Bluetooth, it acts as a sort of portable games console.
Can I switch off the RGB lighting on the sticks?
Yes. Not only can you choose the colour or brightness of the LED lighting around the sticks, but you can also simply switch it off completely if it’s not your thing.
Is the screen suitable for retro pixel art?
Absolutely. The 4:3 aspect ratio and high resolution ensure that pixel art is displayed sharply and without compromise.
Can I connect more than one controller?
Yes, you can easily pair additional controllers via Bluetooth 5.3. This means you can even play multiplayer games with others if you like, but you’ll need to set those controllers up properly via the emulator you’re using at the time.
