The Retroid Pocket 6 is a worthy successor to the Pocket 5 and the later Pocket G2. What makes this beast truly unique is the choice of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Until now, we’ve mainly seen this in very high-end handhelds such as the Ayn Odin 2 Portal or Ayn Thor, but Retroid is now bringing this raw power to a wider audience. Another unique feature is that you can choose the button layout yourself – more on that later in the description.

Why the ‘ Retroid Pocket 6 ’ is special

What immediately sets the Retroid Pocket 6 apart is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. There are now all sorts of mature drivers available for this chipset, such as the well-known Turnip drivers. That means you can even run Nintendo Switch emulation on this handheld. Emulating modern systems on a handheld of this size is still just really cool, even though the device is actually pure overkill for many classic systems.

Of course, you can play all the classics on this without any problems, but the extra power makes this handheld future-proof and suitable for more demanding systems such as the PlayStation 3 and even PC emulation.

The screen is a real eye-catcher. A stunning AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1080p and a 120Hz refresh rate. This opens the door to all sorts of cool graphical tweaks such as frame insertion, CRT filters and other shaders, making your games look even better.

The Pro version features 8 GB s of RAM, which is more than enough for most scenarios. However, here at RetroGear, we recommend opting for the Max version with 12 GB RAM. This gives the chipset a little more breathing space and allows it to perform to its full potential, particularly when running demanding emulations such as PS3 or PC games. In our pre-order, we offer both variants:

What makes the Pocket 6 vparticularly unique is the choice of stick and D-pad layout. You can choose between a top-left D-pad or a top-left stick. Personally, I go for the top-left D-pad because I play a lot of platformers, but if you’re more of a PlayStation or stick-centred gamer, the top-left stick is probably a better choice.
