As we’ve come to expect from Analogue, the Analogue 3D is a brilliant piece of hardware. Analogue itself calls the Nintendo 64 the best multiplayer system ever, and I couldn’t agree more. For me, the N64 remains the number one couch co-op experience. The hours I spent with my childhood friends playing Super Smash Bros, Pokémon Stadium, Mario Kart, and of course Snowboard Kids… truly amazing.

The Analogue 3D brings that feeling back, but with all the luxury we’d expect in 2026.

What is the ‘ Analogue 3D ’?

In short, the Analogue 3D is a modern version of the Nintendo 64. It’s not an emulator, but FPGA hardware that replicates the original console with extreme accuracy. All N64 games are fully supported, regardless of region.

Via HDMI, you can play your games in 4K on a modern television. The operating system offers a wide range of options for customising the display, such as filters and resolution tweaks. There are even settings that allow some games to run better and more smoothly than they ever did on the original hardware.

What’s more, 3D-OS offers something really lovely: box art and a proper games library. As soon as you use cartridges, they’re added to your collection in the menu. With box art on the SD card, it feels as though you’re browsing through a modern games library, whilst still playing with physical cartridges.

The design

I’ve now owned several Analogue devices, and the feeling is always the same: super premium. It starts with the box itself. Minimalist, sleek, and you immediately get the sense that you’re holding something special.

When you open the box, you’ll find the Analogue 3D itself, along with an HDMI cable, a USB-C cable and a (US-style) power brick. The console doesn’t look exactly like a Nintendo 64, m, but it’s unmistakably inspired by the original. The curved shapes, the central cartridge slot, the iconic power button on the left and reset button on the right, and of course the four controller ports on the front.

The 3D is a lot more compact than the original N64 and looks brilliant alongside other consoles in your collection. Even the underside has been well thought out, with a non-slip rubber base and a sleek, clean design. The moment I unpacked it, I genuinely felt as though I was twelve again, opening a Christmas present.

Software & usage

The 3D-OS operating system is a perfect match for the hardware design: minimalist, fast and easy to navigate. The initial set-up is simple. You pair the **8BitDo controller**s – which you can order at the same time – by pressing the power LED, and it works straight away.

Once you’ve carried out any necessary software updates via SD card (this only takes a few minutes), the system is ready to use. As soon as you insert your cartridges, they’ll automatically appear in your library. With the box art, it looks absolutely fantastic – just like browsing through a modern console interface.

Of course, the correct cartridge must always be inserted into the console to play. It remains a genuine, physical N64 experience.

Is gaming any fun at all?

Short answer: yes, absolutely.

I’ve started playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time again, and it was so much fun to walk past the Deku Tree once more after all these years. I also dug out Snowboard Kids again for a fun session with my daughter. Super Smash Bros with friends and Starfox (Lylat Wars) are still on the agenda, and I can’t wait to get stuck into them.

What a great time to be a gamer.

The controllers

The 8BitDo controllers are available in the same colour as the console. They are perfectly suited to N64 games. The joystick is centred, the A and B buttons are in the right places, and the Z button is cleverly positioned so that you can use it comfortably with either hand.

Of course, you can also connect original Nintendo 64 controllers, but these modern Bluetooth controllers are so great that they’ll win you over in no time.
