Analogue 3D - the ultimate Nintendo 64 experience, reinvented

As we have come to expect from Analogue, the Analogue3D is a great piece of hardware. Analogue itself calls the Nintendo 64 the best multiplayer system ever, and I completely agree. For me, the N64 remains the number one couch co-op experience. The hours I spent with childhood friends playing Super Smash Bros, Pokémon Stadium, Mario Kart, and of course Snowboard Kids... truly amazing.

The Analogue 3D brings back that feeling, but with all the luxury we expect in 2025.

What is the Analogue 3D?

The Analogue 3D is, in short, a modern version of the Nintendo 64. No emulation, but FPGA hardware that mimics the original console extremely accurately. All N64 games are fully supported, regardless of region.

Via HDMI, you play your games in 4K output on a modern television. The operating system offers extensive options to customise image playback, such as filters and resolution tweaks. There are even settings that make some games play better and more stable than they ever did on the original hardware.

In addition, 3D-OS brings something very nice: box-art and a real game library. As soon as you use cartridges, they are added to your collection in the menu. With box-art on the SD card, it feels like browsing through a modern game library, while still playing with physical cartridges.

The design

I have now held several Analogue devices in my hands, and the feeling is always the same: super premium. It starts with the box. Minimalist, sleek, and immediately the idea that you have something special in your hands.

Upon opening, you see the Analogue 3D itself, along with an HDMI cable, USB-C cable and a (US) power brick. The console does not look exactly like a Nintendo 64, butat the same time it is unmistakably inspired by the original. The wavy shapes, the central cartridge slot, the iconic power button on the left and reset button on the right, and of course the four controller ports on the front.

The 3D is a lot more compact than the original N64 and looks great next to other consoles in your collection. Even the bottom is thoughtful, with a non-slip rubber sole and a sleek, clean design. The moment I unwrapped it I seriously felt like I was 12 again, opening a Christmas present.

Software & usage

The operating system 3D-OS matches the hardware design perfectly: minimalist, fast and uncluttered. Initial setup is simple. You paired the 8BitDo controllers (provided by RetroGear) by pressing the power LED, and it works immediately.

After any software update via SD card (this only takes a few minutes), the system is ready to use. As soon as you insert cartridges, they automatically appear in your library. With box-art, this looks really great, as if you are browsing through a modern console interface.

Of course, the right cartridge must always be in the console to play. It's still a real, physical N64 experience.

Is gaming a bit of fun?

Short answer: yes, absolutely.

I restarted Zelda: Ocarina of Time and it was so much fun to walk through the Deku Tree again after all these years. Snowboard Kids also came out again for a fun session with my daughter. Super Smash Bros with friends and Starfox (Lylat Wars) are still scheduled, and I already can't wait for those.

What a great time to be a gamer.

The controllers

We supply the Analogue 3D stand with 2× 8BitDo controllers in the colour of the console. These are perfectly matched to N64 games. The joystick is centred, A and B are in the right place, and the Z button is cleverly placed so you can use it comfortably on both the left and right.

You can of course plug in original Nintendo 64 controllers, but these modern Bluetooth controllers are so fine that they will win you over.
